McKay's Meats takes first prize for the tastiest Cumberland Sausage
Shoppers at Fell Gather in Cockermouth witnessed an exciting sausage showdown at the final of the Traditional Cumberland Sausage Competition last Saturday.
T.V. Celebrity Cook Annette Gibbons judged alongside Operations Director of English Lakes Hotels Douglas Dale & Celebrity Cumbrian born British Broadcaster Eric Robson.
The overall winner of the competition is B.McKay of Ulverston who has received a luxury hotel break supplied by sponsors English Lakes Hotels and an engraved trophy. In second place is G.Gordon Butchers of Carlisle and third is F.W.Garside of Ambleside: both will also receive engraved trophies.

In addition to the competition Traditional Cumberland Sausage Day is on the 5th July. Last year café’s and restaurants from around the county joined in by holding BBQ’s or putting special Cumberland sausage dishes on their menus. Made in Cumbria are asking any businesses who plan to hold a special event for the day this year to contact them so that their details can be included on the Traditional Cumberland Sausage Day page as well as any other publicity.

The campaign has been organised by Made in Cumbria and the Cumberland Sausage Association.

The British Government has given the thumbs up to a campaign to give Traditional Cumberland Sausage the same protection as products like Champagne and Parma Ham.
The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has announced that it believes the application to register the Traditional Cumberland Sausage as a protected food name meets all the necessary criteria. The decision means the application will now be sent to the European Commission in Brussels.
